) A SHARP rise in the number of helicopter sightseeing trips above the Capital has sparked a growing number of noise complaints - but authorities say they are powerless to silence the fliers. Since the start of the year, six complaints about helicopter noise have been made to council chiefs as more and more people buy helicopter trips as presents for birthdays, graduations and weddings - causing headaches for people on the ground below. |

Helicopter noise 'misery' claims |
 The heliport is allowed up to 12,000 landings and take-offs a year Residents living near London's only heliport have said the volume of traffic is making their life a misery. They said the noise from helicopter movements at London's only heliport in Battersea, west London, was "terrible". The London Assembly is carrying out an investigation into the impact of any increase in helicopter traffic and noise has had on Londoners. Heliport operator Weston Aviation said it does not exceed its annual allowance of 12,000 helicopter movements. |

The London Assembly’s Environment Committee has been investigating the issue of helicopter noise in London, focusing primarily on the following areas:
- To establish what impact any increase in helicopter traffic and noise has had on Londoners and how this is being addressed;
- To determine helicopter route-ing in London and to assess whether improvements can be made to the way helicopter air traffic is managed;
- To establish the noise performance of helicopters typically used and the different types of helicopter use in London;
- To examine the effectiveness of the three policies on helicopter noise in the Mayor’s Noise Strategy.
